From now till January the 31st 2008 anyone purchasing the HD-DVD player will able to send off for five free HD movies from a choice of thirteen and MS promise to have the films to you within 28 days. Not a bad deal at all considering the player itself now retails at an almost reasonable outlandish GBP 114.99.

The selection of films on offer isn't to be sniffed at either, most people should be able to find at least two or three they'd like to add to their collection. Highlights from the list include Serenity, Children of Men, Corpse Bride and Full Metal Jacket.

"The HD-DVD player for Xbox 360 gives customers a high quality and affordable way to enjoy state-of-the-art HD-DVD movies," said Stephen McGill, head of Gaming at Microsoft UK. "We're delighted to enable everyone to enjoy the technology to the full and offer some fantastic movie releases, completely free."

The full list of titles is as follows : Serenity, Children of Men, Troy, Corpse Bride, Swordfish, The Chronicles of Riddick, Hulk, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Full Metal Jacket, Black Rain, The Prestige, Dreamgirls and World Trade Centre.

The deal is the latest move in Microsoft and Toshiba's big HD-DVD push, after it revealed plans to form the Advanced Interactivity Consortium (AIC), an open forum aimed at boosting the adoption of HD DVD.

Sounds like a great deal for those undecided in the next-gen format war then, but for those of us with PS3s it could be too little, too late. Want to be a rock star? Dream on while watching "The Next Great American Band," premiering tonight at 8 on Fox. Hopefully, this "American Idol"-style series won't focus too much on terrible acts during the two-hour audition show.
