man of the house

An 81-year-old Reservoir man died this morning after he was dragged out of his burning house by firefighters.

Paramedics spent more than 30 minutes trying to revive the man after he was retrieved unconscious from the house.

Metropolitan Fire Brigade spokesman Laurie Crowther said firefighters had to contend with burning objects falling because the roof was full of "brick-a-brac''.

The Strathmerton Street house caught fire just after 2am and destroyed the weatherboard building.

The cause of the fire is yet to be established and the police arson squad will investigate today.

Any witnesses have been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
